Not the first time nor will it be the last. I'm not a pilot so I am in no position to judge what may have or have not occured to have caused this to happen. Either way the AF (and the Navy) needs to fix this before someone gets killed.

Dummy Bomb Dropped in Oklahoma
Associated Press | March 17, 2008
TULSA, Okla. - An Air National Guard jet mistakenly dropped a 22-pound non-explosive, practice bomb on an apartment complex, damaging the foundation but no one was injured, police said Friday.

The military pilot thought he had dropped the BDU-33 bomb, equipped with a dummy warhead, over a field in Kansas during a routine training mission out of Tulsa on Thursday.

A couple returned home to the Canyon Creek apartment complex and found the ordnance partly buried in the foundation and the power knocked out, Tulsa Police Officer Jason Willingham said.

The fighter aircraft was en route to Smokey Hill Gunnery Range in (!!NEAR !!) Salina, Kan., on a routine mission, according to a statement released Friday by the Oklahoma Air National Guard's 138th Fighter Wing.

Shortly after takeoff, the training bomb inadvertently released from the aircraft, the guard statement said.

A safety investigation board has been convened and the investigation is ongoing, the statement said.

The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are investigating.

Willingham said the Air National Guard removed the ordnance from the scene.

A manager at the apartment complex, who declined to give his name, said it was back to business as usual at the complex Friday morning.

"God must love the people at Canyon Creek," he said.
GOLLY PEOPLE R STUPID. Look SALINA up with www.mapquest or Google earth & you will see there is a NICE LONG RUNWAY there. That is where I took the tests for FLIGHT STATUS. That is where the B47 BOMBERS were & at LINCOLN NEBRASKA. We had the RB-47-E, H & K MODELS at FORBES AIR FORCE BASE @ TOPEKA KANSAS. Here is the link to my ENGINEERING OFFICER, REXHe was aircraft commander of a RB-47-H, The ELECTRONIC SPY SHIP.

There is a good chance that this was not pilot error. I watched a Centerline Fuel Tank drop from an RF-4C during takeoff. After the AB's lit off the fuel from the ruptured CL it made very interesting spectacle as it slid down the runway spewing flame and black smoke. Cause: Short in the wiring loom inside one of the main gear bays. It took quite a while to find it as they had to jack the AC and swing the gear to find the cause (bad squat switch, who knew it could short to the the CL release).

Long story, short conclusion. Old AC mean strange things happen and they require lots of expensive maintenance. And it's not just overstressed airframe components.

Dog Has to Fly.

..I was in charge of salvage repair at the Q.M. warehouse on the hill close to the airstrip..I was on detached service from the 1066th Q.M.Co.12th Air Service Group.. One day the Major in charge came to my office with a Brigadier General..I was very much ill at ease, as I was never in direct company with a General..
..The General was introduced to me as General Hood from General Chennault's staff..After the Major left, the General presented his request..His request was: General Chennault was having an old fighter pilot's seat installed in his personal aircraft for his dog..I had to upholster the seat..The only material available and suitable was G.I salvaged blankets..The General was pleased with the idea..
..I got a jeep and my Chinese tailors and followed the staff car to the revetment..The General turned me over to the crew chief and on his orders the tailor upholstered the seat..
..After completion,I was again visited by General Hood to commend me for a job well done..
..Thereafter, General Hood visited me many times to get away from the office..

Hi, Rex! Was there in 64/65 when B-47's and KC-135's were still busting eardrums. The base, Schilling AFB, was closed in 65 because it was deemed too expensive to lengthen the runway for B-52's and upgrade the 12 Atlas missile sites to the Titan missile series. Technology sure has come a long way since then, except the AF is still using the venerable old B-52 for just about everything!

Actually they are pretty lucky, Usually the BDU 33 is fused with a marker charge that is visible for a mile or so. It could have easily caught the complex on fire.

Well bend me over and call me Suzy! A Cheeseburger! Whenever one of those was loaded on a C-130 at CRBAB, we (fire dept) we required to hose the bird crap off it. They had been in storage so long, some genius at the Pentagon decided the guano constituted biological warfare!
