States Step Up with War Vet Aid
http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,164093,00.html

If only the same people who send these brave young people into war could TRY to remember that they MUST be taken care of when they return, and for as long as they need that help.

A function of the FEDERAL government.

Agreed.

Care for veterans needed as a result of active Federal service falls squarely of the Federal Government.

While we all appreciate the contribution of various state's Departments of Veterans Affairs and the many non-profit veteran's organizations - they should not be necessary. Our servicemen and women fulfill their obligations to their country...it's high time the nation does the same and fulfills it's obligations to those who have served.

It is nice to see that PTSD is curable - recently here in Pasco County, Florida, a group of our Vietnam vets with PTSD were released from the program. I guess they were cured as they were told that they no longer needed to be treated or to meet either as a group or individually. Glad to see great strides have been made. Does this mean that our vets out of Iraq will receive treatment for at least 35 years before they are cured or released when the program becomes overloaded with vets from a future conflict.

While I agree that it is the Federal Government's responsibility to fund veterans programs and provide communities with the resources necessary to assist returning OEF/OIF veterans, only the local community can bring them home. That's why the Oregon National Guard Reintegration Team is now working with local communities throughout the state. We don't have Military Treatment Facilities, Military OneStop, or most of the facilities active duty soldiers have available to them on post. To bring our vets home, we have to involve the local community as much as possible.

While we are a Oregon National Guard team, we make ourselves available to all Reserve Components throughout Oregon. Want some ideas for your State? Check out the site. Nothing we do has a copyright.

Texas has gone a step above and beyond. In last years Nov election, a new law was passed that says that if you are a disabled vet, your property tax will be reduced, from 10% to a 100% disabled vet who will get a 100%rebate on his property taxes, forever. Also Texvets has an excellent home ownership assistance program. As a 100% disabled vet, I got a 4.5% 30 year homeloan backed by Texvets in 2004. $2 for a license plate, free parking at any parking meter, front row free parking at major events. Texas knows how much that vets, especially disabled vets need, and they are on the leading edge in providing for us. When looking for a job, there are people who do nothing but help all vets in finding a good job. I have lived in many states, but Texas by far provides the most help and assistance. A national organization that also helps vets, and helped me get my 100% disability rate is the DAV, Disabled American Veterans. I am proud to be a life member of this fine organization. They have offices at all VA hospitals and VA offices, and their people are very well trained in the ins and outs of the VA. Remember this, Democrats have been on the forefront in trying to get VA benifits and money for the VA improved. Dispite both the current administration and many republician members of congress(not all, but many stayed with the administration line in trying to keep the VA monies down. Remember when the VA had to ask for $4Billion in an emergency appropriation?, it was Dems in both the house and senate who pushed hardest for this. At this point in time, republician members, and some dems, seam to believe that multinational corperations are who they are working for, not ordinary americans. The current administration hands out no bid contracts in Iraq, which are cost plus. The majority of the companies-KBR is a prime example-seem to think that this is a license to print money)

It's starting to look like the most current application of the 'all-volunteer' force is going to require much greater resources than previous engagements. Casualty ratios, and the effects of third generation warfare on a standing army, were not foreseen. Nor were they cost-factored. This cost will be significant.

Dead heroes are one thing, and losses were considered and planned-for. Wounded heroes requiring substantial long-term support are something else. Estimations appear to have been optimistic, but there's nothing sadder than a wounded soldier.

America needs to win, or the treatment of Iraq vets will make the Vietnam experience seem like a 'home and a feeder'.

A friend of mine is going into a PTSD treatment center for 5-12 weeks. Does anyone know where he can apply for assistance to help cover his rent and utilities while he is in the program? I do not want him to lose what he has because he is trying to get better. He has no savings.

Great article, we need more action at the state and federal level to give our vets the help they need and rightly deserve.

They are making the ultimate sacrifice and we should honor that without regard to a price tag!!

Yes “Democrats are out to help you” “Clinton is out to help you” repeat these mantras four times a day, every day, of course you can replace with republican if you want it makes little difference. But when you say democrats want to help remember the help they want to provide will probly be like Jesse Brown again and with much more help like that we will be completely out of business, most recent was the Senate voted to establish an earmark moratorium for fiscal years 2009. By a margin of 71-29, the vote failed. Following the vote, 71 Senators--mostly democrats along with 26 Republicans took the fast train out of town to begin their Easter Recess. This would have reduced the politics in the VA budget
