You all just wait till the eviro-kooks get the polar bear protected. You want be able to fart with out a permit much less even sail a ship and train the crews.

Gun Here we go again, forget about protecting the people of the United States, hell, we got lots of people, but by all means protect those whales and turtles. I don't believe this, it gets worse and worse.

This whole thing - whether California or North Carolina - suggests the title of a new movie: "The Navy Is Coming ... The Navy Is Coming". Too bad we can no longer have Theodore Bikel to play the captain. (Maybe Fallon would be a good substitute?)

Me thinks the ocean life is far more intelligent than the people trying to protect them...

I am sure these whiners and complainers would be much happier living under a Taliban government, where the Rights of Sea Turtles are always respected, as long as they conform to Sharia Law.

INCREMENTALISM

First the Pacific, then Hawaii, now the east coast.Just a few more Oceans to go!Boy those tree huggers should be happy now.But not to worry, when a real threat shows up they plan on getting in their ROW BOATS and throw their LAW BOOKS to protect our shores, and our Ships deployed in foriegn waters.

As a former Sonar Supervisor on a Spruance class destroyer, it is imperative that actual sonar is used for training purposes. The trainers that are integrated into the sonar suite are just not effective enough.

In a "perfect" environment the On-board trainer simulates actual contacts and does not take into account real-world scenarios. This makes it necessary to provide open ocean active sonar training where our sonar teams can actually do their training.

Most people don't consider submarines a threat anymore, but they are sadly mistaken. The Germans controlled the Atlantic back in the early 40's using diesel subs....just imagine what the Chinese could do today with nuclear subs....

The Coast Guard is having the same issue in the Great Lakes. They can't perform live fire exercises with 50 Cals in Lake Superior for fear that the metal will hurt marine life. I really think all the enviromentalist ought to go try and practice there hobby in China where it would do some real good. That would permanently solve the problem.

Gotta love how people bring up the FEAR card - gotta be afraid of the big bad Taliban.

It's getting old, people. No one is buying into the fear scam anymore...

Do some ASW operations off of the coast of California and you will realize how useless hull-mounted active sonar is in those waters. It's all about the ITASS, baby.

Sure ITASS would be great IF your capt. decides to stream it. Here's a basic rundown of a typical tail streaming evolution:
6:00PM- TACTAS streaming briefing in wardroom
7:30PM- Perform all pre-streaming maintenance
9:00PM- Run range predictions
11:00PM-Man TACTAS
11:30PM-Permission granted to stream tail
3:30AM- Retrieve TACTAS
4:00AM- Perform post-streaming maintenance
5:00AM- Attempt to catch 2 hours of sleep before morning muster.

4 hours of streaming....not a lot of training happening on a watch floor for a division of 20 people.

What? Terrorists now have both submarines and trained crews? How did the news agencies, including the White House Press Secretary, miss that?

The Taliban may not have any submarines, but China, North Korea and other countries still do. But I'm sure people like you deepsand wouldn't think that those countries would do something against the US right? Wake up! I don't plan on speaking Chinese or Korean anytime soon, so keep pinging away. Did you remember to hug a tree today?

Yes; but, how many of those countires are truly hostile? And, of those that may be, how many either presently have or are developing the means to both undertake long range naval strikes and protect against counter-strikes?

That you should chose to live your life under constant cloud of fear does not require that everyone else do likewise.

As for our environment, you seem to lack an understanding of the elaborate interdependencies of all life forms, and thus erroneously conclude that man's interference with the well being of a given species is of no consequence to all others.

The Iranian Navy is increasing it's Submarine fleet. If they wanted to they could shut down the Strait of Hormuz at the drop of a hat.Seeing as we are an offensive Navy able to take the fight into foriegn waters it would be wise for us to have our training done before we get into those waters. These waters supply the life blood of the Western world's economy, shuting down these lanes even for just three months can cause lasting damage to the entire world's economic well being. This in mind ,the US Navy needs to be ready at ALL TIMES.You can call this "living your life under a constant cloud of fear" all you want. The US Navy needs to be at the ready 24/7 365.Anything short of that would be a dereliction of duty by the JCS.
