Personally I think this is more a idiot that likes to cause problems than a terroist attack.
Assumming the picture I saw were accurate all that was done was break the window. I also read that this is the third in a series of similar bombings over a couple of years with the other two targets being British and Mexican. In all three cases the bombs were set by someone on a bicycle, were small and did minimal damage.

I had heard that the explosive was black powder which is why there was so much smoke but I don't know if this is true. The following story also seems to state that it was black powder.

quote:
"The mention of a bicyclist raised possible links to a May 2005 bombing at the British Consulate and an Oct. 26 explosion at the Mexican Consulate," the New York Daily News notes. "In both cases, police said, the suspect was possibly riding a bicycle when hollowed-out grenades - filled with black powder and a fuse - were tossed into the consulates. No arrests were made in those attacks."

Here is some additional information about this nut.
TICKING TIME BOMB TIMES SQ. BLAST JUST LATEST IN BIKE RADICAL'S NYC SPREE

quote:
March 9, 2008 -- Investigators now believe the bicyclist who set off a bomb at the Times Square recruiting station early Thursday is definitely the same person responsible for explosions at the British and Mexican consulates and may have been involved in small bombings around the city going back a decade, sources said.
Officials believe the hooded cyclist may also have set off bombs outside a Wall Street bank in 2000, the old Planet Hollywood on West 57th Street in 1997 and another at the former Swiss Bank Building at 222 Broadway the same year, the sources said.

All the incidents occurred in the early-morning hours and similar crude black-powder bombs were detonated. And in all of them, no one was hurt.

In the 2000 bombing that shattered windows at the Barclay Bank Building at 75 Wall St., the explosive device was packed into a metal ammunition box similar to the one used in Thursday morning's Times Square bombing.

In the Planet Hollywood bombing, a metal coffee can was used.

In the Swiss Bank bombing, a man wearing a ski mask and a trench coat was seen running from the scene.

Criminal profilers believe the culprit is an older radical dating back to the 1970s who is local and has ties to chaos-loving anarchist groups, sources said.

They added that the bomber does not appear intent on harming anyone, as the explosions have never increased in size.
