Look this is great stuff but now our enemies now know about it and guess what they will what to get a hold of. This should have been kept secret from me I do not want to know this I didn't need to know this but sure as hell the bad guys love something like this. Alan PDX |

Yep, the cat's out of the bag as they say, but, this is a great idea and anything that can reduce the incidents of "friendly fire" killings is okayed by me.

EXXXXAAACTTTLLLLLYYYY !!!!!! I reckon the dufus that blabs stuff like this to the world, gets credit for the story, but doesnt have to use or wear the items. We come up with a great idea to enhance air support and then let the enemy know exactly how to neuter the whole concept. Is there any way we can hang people like this for treason or aiding and abetting the enemy or being an accomplise to murder. |

Hi Folks,
I can't agree more with the earlier coments ref information security but I also hope that the existance of this equipment is well & truly drummed into all aircrew manning offencive type aircraft. I hope that most of us remember the incident not that far back in time when two A-10 pilots "thought" that an orange marker on the back of a British armour vehicle was possibly a weapon or simply ignored it, this leading to the death of one soldier & the serious injury of many of his comrades. This type of equipment is great & most certainly should never have been discussed openly but now it has I only hope it works the way it should & we don't have to witness complete unnecessary deaths because of "friendly fire". To all out there, especially those in the way of harm, take care, stay safe. |

IR strobes have been around since the 1970's. And the ACU uniform has had IR IFF squares on it since inception.
This really isnt an OPSEC issue, it's common knowledge for the most part |

Why can't these dumbazzs learn to keep their mouths shut? "Pat me on the back, look what I did to help our troops!" Would have taken Johnny Jihad a while to figure out this one out. Love those night vision flicks showing the IED farmers getting lit up and wondering what the hell happened.

Do you not think the first jihadi viewing this equipment through night vision glasses would wonder if he was seeing fireflies? Just before he opened up on them. |

When I worked at Hughes Electronics in Fullerton, CA, there was a project to create a system for the commanders to locate their troops so they always knew where each other was.
This is was in the late 70's and the system was call GPS. I guess it does not work quite they way they wanted it to. |

GPS worked great you did good, but like this, if everyone knows it is not a secret and if I can locate my troops then you can locate my troops oops OnStar anyone God bless and protect all our people in harms way where ever they are. Pro Deo et Patria |

A word of advice to the copany that makes these divices make sure you change the price from $100.00 to $10,000.00 so DOD will by it. Sounds like is a great idea and will save thousands of American lives, just make sure you over charge DOD so they WILL buy it.

With an Air Farce (love you guys, you carried me everywhere)Airman holding it, I think it was released on purpose by the Service.
It could reassure Troops serving and help recruiting to say "this is how we keep our troops from getting killed by FF" since the media does a happy dance to report it everytime it happens. An enemy may get it but they have the same stuff they have stolen now. Radio confirmation would help counter this. On a personal note as an Army Forward Observer, I would have loved to have this. Army-Air Force commo can be patchy and in simulated bomb runs about 20% of the time,a FIST got danger close. This was in the late 80's but still can you say red smear? |

It would have been a nice little gadget in the 60's. Maybe those Cobras would have aimed a little to the right.

Well, it's all a moot point. The male half of the Hillbilly team probably sold it to the Chinese when he was saving the world.

Finally! In 1965 I was a student at the AWS at Quantico. I wrote my "term paper" re a method to identify tanks, etc. during darkness and other times of diminished vision. Now, about 25 years later we have the beginnings of a similiar system. Sometimes the wheels of progress grind slowly! I pray that this system saves many lives. I agree that it would have been much better not to have published the information for all the world to know.
God bless all of our troops. |
