Sounds to me like the honorable Mayor tried to push his personal political agenda and got his pee pee slapped. Oh well, I think I'm going to watch the Toledo Maoral(sp?) race a little closer next time.
How is it the police and city council knew, and it sounds like the citizens were expecting it, but not the Mayor. Either he is lying or he has a cranial rectal inversion. ETCS(SW)USN ret This message has been edited. Last edited by: ChuckW65, |

Whats next is Toledo going to disband the Boy Scouts because there taught to survive in the woods. Just like Berkely they are showing how little they really need the help of the Federal Goverment with any problems that come there way!

Well, as in California, if you vote these freaks into office based upon all the freebies
and handouts they promise, this is what you get. These leftists just don't like our military. They don't like anything to do with law enforcement either. Suggest we all very seriously think about that before November. Now, I formerly lived in Columbus. Good Police force. But I was burgled once successfully, with two unsucessful attempts. Moved twice. Then, My house was shot up by drug bums looking for the guy next door, guess they included me at no additional charge! I moved again, now in Grove City, Ohio. Police have never caught a single one of these degenerate lazy bums. In their defense, they are obviously and simply overwhelmed by the volume of crime, and yet we see on TV and hear constantly about how abused and mistreated the criminal class is, with their "civil rights" violated by the evil police. Vote these bums into office, our military will be the very first target for fund cutting and reduction. As will your right to keep and bear arms to defend your family when this same trash comes to your door. In our government you get exactly what you vote for. |

Just cut off the Federal funding to that damn city. The Mayor was just trying to make a political statement and it backfired on him just like that incident in Berkley.

I can understand that a mayor is trying to be sensitive to the pedestrian on the street meeting armed marines on street corners. But what the good Mayor should have done is taken out a add the previous week, announcing the excercise and encouraging the pedestrians to thank their marines when they see them.
THAT would have been the way to handle this. |

The mayor should be tried for treason then hung. Afterwards let the marine artillery use his house for practice.

I am a veteran and I agree with the mayor. The marines have no place playing war games in a highly populated area. The citizens unless informed ahead of time certainly would be afraid of what they would see. I certainly do not think the citizens of Toledo should be put into that situation. The military could easily erect props on a military base.

I'm confused. I didn't know road blocks weren't used in Ohio. They must never have any parades or anything like that. [sarcasm]
Sounds like the Mayor has no real reason, other than his politics, and was just trying to offer bogus rationale. I understand people's opinion to be against the Iraq war, but when did serving in the military or training to protect the US have anything to do with that. Wars or conflicts are waged by political decisions. If you are really upset about a decision, go tell the politicians. Don't punish those who serve and protect us. I wonder if the Mayor and Berkley Council are buddies. |

exerpt from article: "officials had been aware of the Marines' training plans for weeks. The mayor said that he did not learn of them until reading a news item in Friday's Blade. " that is called a "lack of communications", and a F^ck up on the mayors and police's part. not the Marines. |

According to the article, the mayor did not know about the maneuvers until something like the day before. There is not one good reason for the marines to be doing military excercises in a densely populated area. Do you see the army doing this? I think whoever the marine officer was that thought of doing this should be reprimanded. It is outrageous. And by the way, I am a veteran. There are many many posts in this country that they could conduct their excercises on. |

This could go both ways I guess. The Marines need to train in urban warfare and an actual cityscape would make best scenario. But then I also see the Mayor's point in having a general concern over his city population's safety and welfare. I do think him turning them around was pretty much not necessary though.
A little more time in informing the city, including the mayors office, and possibly even some one-on-one discussions with city leaders and the military on where and when they wanted to train, what city blocks to close off to general population during that time, etc. would have worked out better. Really these types of training exercises could benefit Toledo and the Marine Corps both. I think a lot of high school kids might have more ambitions on joining the services if they saw the work they really do outside of a video game. But yeah, I think the Mayor took this waaaayyy to seriously and should have let them train. |

I hear Detroit is available and can use the Marines help. They can use a 'surge'. Just Pelosi said yesterday that the Surge hadnt work but the Troops had succeeded. Dont know how that works but, ok.

I used to live in Northwest PA and I can't recall any major Army bases up in that region. There certainly aren't any MArine bases there either. It was a unit of reservists who a)needed training in an urban environment because military minds predict that is where the bulk of our battles will be fought and b)are too far away to travel to an actual base that would have the appropriate facilities. The article mentioned that the location on the day of the planned exercise was nearly empty, so its not like they were conducting exercises in the middle of rush hour. Advanced notice to the citizens would definitely be warranted but don't you think it would be kind of nice if the average person got to see what kind of training we actually do? This whole thing could have been no different than the locals bing allowed to watch an amphibious landing at a public beach. By the way for those who are mad at the city, if you read the article you'd notice that the mayor was pretty much the only one who supported his decision.. everyone else thought it was the wrong call. No need to punish Toledo |
