Actually, there's a lot to be said for this idea. While the hand-wringing Kumbaya crowd would most certainly object, the members of al Qai'da would certainly respond with great fear and intimidation to such tactics. It is a brutal lesson that dates back to Atilla the Hun, William the Conqueror and a host of other great warriors who subdued entire nations with the absoluteness of their brutality and willingness to use it. And, yes, it allows us to become that what we sought to avoid. Not trying to say that this is a clean or even morally justifiable solution. We would use the same brutal tactics that motivated us to fight this enemy.
Sometimes, these things have to be done. And if we do them, then we have to live with ourselves.
I for one would have no problem living with myself whatever we did to these creeps. However, AQ realizes they've lost the populace to us and will prob'ly focus on getting it back. They have nothing to offer, so they would prob'ly try to goad us into killing civvies for propaganda. Hit hard fight hard but be smart about it. Don't give 'em anything they can use.
Absolutely; we ought to withdraw some; reposition others, based upon the recommendations of Military Commanders!
- But, we never ought to withdraw based upon an arbitrary timetable designed for the sake of political expediency.
- And, military withdrawal decisions must adequately consider the Government's (Country's) responsibility to defend it's people, its values, its interests, and its territorities - with a military force second to none and positioned in the best judgement of the Military Commanders (Not Politicians)!!!!!

This should come a no surprise. With the kind of mass we can openly and continuously bring to bear on any adversary, such an outcome is likely.
There are those who want to revel at this news, citing "victory". Fine - but why do those people even think that it was going to be tough to begin with? The most difficult aspect of this so-called "war" is proper target selection. Once they've been found, they have always gone down, and with ridiculous ease.
al Qaida, like many others, have simply become victims of hype. But the happy irony is that they were too damned stupid to not fall prey to it. They can't mass like they did against the Soviets. They don't have the backing of a major power like they did against the Soviets. And their cause as terrorists is not the same as their cause as mujahideen.

Another article (Associated Press 2/9/08) tells how we are horribly "strained" to be able to respond anywhere else around the world to terrorist threats. When will our kids get a break? You misrepresent McCain's statement. I am not a fan of John McCain, but he was referring to an occupation of Iraq for a 100 years much like Japan, or Germany.
