Frankly, I understand the position of the supporters of keeping the recruiting station where it is. It seems to be in prime location. However, never forget that the Corp, as well as all branches of service, is here to serve the people. Actually, the military serves at the pleasure of the President, who in turn is there to serve the people. You could argue the old "our's is but to do or die" in the same context.

If the people decide to remove/relocate the recruiting office, so be it.

In an effort to calm tensions between Republican lawmakers and the city, Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates released a statement that attempted to clarify the city's position on the Marines recruiting center.

"Let me be absolutely clear that this is not about the men and women who are serving our country in our armed forces. I am a retired U.S. Army captain and I respect the choice of those who are serving our country.

Retired US Army Captain? Is it just me who thinks someone had issues in the military if they retired as a Captain? Or, perhaps, he was medically retired for a service connected condition, in which case I would expect him, as a disabled vet, to tell the protestors to shove their signs

If by "people" you mean the City Council of Berkeley or the residents of Berkeley, SO BE IT NOT. Watching the little pissants backpeddle as they perceive the threat to their external taxpayer funding amuses the heck out of me. THEY sure aren't "staying the course"! More like "cut and run".

Wow! Did i just travel back in time to the 60's ? Alot of the people in this country disgust me!! They urinate on the military at every turn , seems they would rather give our country to our enemies than develop a spine & backbone and actually fight for it.. They should be thanking those veterens still alive & any active duty person they meet, for the rights they have to crap on them when the feel like it!

being mad at the military is stupid ! That is like pulling tha tail off a lizard. It will not stop the lizard !

The military follows the orders given by CIVILIANS.........if you want us out of Iraq then go protest Washington DC !
The military will be happy to follow orders and leave Iraq as soon as the CIVILIANS tell them to !

Obviously DugasTroyA flunked basic history. The US Constitution guarantees there will be a Army and a Navy, therefore they do not serve at the pleasure of the President. That's why they aren't allowed to wear their uniform to political rally's, events etc to prevent the perception of endorsement of an individual or party, I say and turn it into a parking lot

You know, its so weird. These people bask in the freedom provided by our servicemen and women but crap on them every chance they get. They wouldn't issue the Marines a permit to shoot a commercial until Bill O'Reilly got involved, now this. Maybe the Marines in the movie "The Rock" had the best idea......hit San Fransisco with a bomb. I know that sounds harsh, but jeez louise. Why do they hate the AMERICAN military so much?

Glade to hear the Marines are getting a little support. I always was confused about the issue of love verse war. Homosexual, drug dealing, want more welfare and drug treatment centers types. They push for abortion and for stem cell research so they can sell their babies to research firms and spend years going to school having casual sex and never making any sacrifices. Then they protest VETs for defending the Country and good Churches for having standards they can not reach. I would shut the town down, school and all, no threats. The American people deserve better leaders. I suspect the problem in the area is the lack of a good gene pool. Take one pathetic snivilling coward of a man and put him in with drugged out wemon and the result is a moron. Not just one, a whole town.

Hoooooooah!!!!!!!! What's next, relocate the police and sheriff's departments (think of the response times). These people have surely gone off their rockers!
As for the so called Mayor, I am a retired Army NCO and he never should have allowed this with out a serious fight! It was a slap in the face to our brothers and sisters in the Marines!

I am only an outsider looking in on this story so please tell me to bug off if you wish. However, correct me if I am wrong. Isn't Berkeley a city in the United States? Isn't the United States Marine Corps still an "agency" of the United States Government? If the answer to these questions is yes, then why isn't an elephant stomping on these p**s ants?

It is, it is just a little slow this morning. There is a resolution in Congress "Semper Fi 2008" to take away federal funds from Berkley.

While what the city council is doing is obviously ridiculously disrespectful and inappropriate, isn't it also freedom of speech? Wouldn't cutting off funding or punishing Berkeley be violating the civil rights of the council members?

The way I see it is that Berkeley is not entitled any federal funds. If they don't want an arm of the federal government in their city then they don't want federal support.

No. this is no different than cutting off federal highway money to a state that ignores fed recommendation regarding alcohol or drug laws or speed limits. while honoring state and local rights, the fed still has some powerful arm-twisting at its disposal.

Glad to hear that part of the communist zone (also known as the gay area I mean bay area) will lose a ton of federal funding. The same need to happen to the communist city of Scam (F)agsicko (also known as San Franscisco).
