I wonder if they had any intentions of "sizing up" our reaction in the face of a hostile attack so to use it against us later in the event of possible conflict between the U.S. and Iran. They learned how to shoot down our Helo's by observing how we deploy them, why not try to get some insight on our naval tactics...get us to "show our hand" so to speak. Does this make sense to anyone else?

We sat on our duffs and let Russian ships go right by us on North SAR the entire Viet Nam war knowing dam well they were carrying weapons that would be used against us. Iran years later and nothing has changed how many presidents have let that bunch of radicals kill and humilate the U.S. now this incident someday we will have to take the bull by the horns and set them straight! Until that happens i see this type incidents continuing.
this same kind of incidents happened in the med and persion gulf in 1987-1988.they damn sure woulnd not of gotten within 200 yards of our frigate the uss joseph hewes ff-1078.
This is Iran's MO. They have no fear of provocation as they will spin the truth to whatever best suits them. Any action taken by the US would be touted as imperial aggression, any perceived provocation by them will be denied and we will be accused of inciting an incident. It is a no lose situation for a country that detests us.
I trust the Iranians as far as a Navy sailor can throw them. Screw the Iranian navies and their foreign ministry. They have to resort to such tactics and behavior.
This is the first time I heard of a recent occurrence. On WestPac '03, there were no such incidents. If they really have a wish to swim with all those jellyfish, we can provide, but that comes with other troubles from that country. I echo poconnor71 on the likelihood of this being them "sizing up" the US, foolish as that is. To postulate is one thing, but to make statements, according to VADM Cosgriff, "to the effect that they were closing (on) our ships and that the ships would explode - the U.S. ships would explode," is personally reckless and has the obvious potentially lethal hazards that all too easily could come from "rushing" a US warship. Oh yeah, this was a group of a cruiser, destroyer and frigate. Maybe they were trying their own version of the USS Cole, but in the Strait Hormuz. Foolish does not come close; reckless is not quite there; stupidity just about describes it. A little anxious to hear and see the video. Hopefully we see it here on Milcom.
So the Iranians are up to their old tricks once again. These people should have been blown out of the water. I have seen some video of it, and it seems quite clear to me that they were playing with fire. As they got away with this I can't wait to see what they try to pull off next. Are we gonna have another Stark or Cole before the Navy commanders start taking the safety of their vessels seriously? They only need one warning after that all bets should be off!!
They won by their actions and have shown they are ready to bring the US Navy to task. The best response in this type of culturial enviorment would be to open up on them one at a time. That would discourage any future incidents. We have got to stop dealing with them in our western mindset, when we do we lose.
It shoulda been like: Come within 300 yards of us-WARNING!; 200 yards,-WARNING SHOT; 150 yards-DEATH BY NAVAL GUN, dont stand for this lying and BS that the IRGC is trying with us, let them know we arent playing! : "F^&K with the BEST, DIE like the REST"
nothing really new. small boats have been harassing our ships for years now while they are transiting through the straits. Every time we transited the straights in 97 we had to man all crew served weapons just in case.
While many think that they are doing this to see what we do, that may be true. But, they do this crap all the time. On both of my deployments to the region, they would test us at least once a week. But, at least this time we actually retaliated. During my first deployment, those of us that were on 24 hour gun quarters were told to put our guns at air-ready (a locked position) or be written up. So, every CO will handle it differently. It just so happens that the CO in this last instance had a pair. Ours, unfortunately, didn't. And, he came from SpecOps. Imagine that. It confounded the hell outta me.

No cause and effect relationship there although it was funny. Iran is trying to play with the big boys and they will get their's eventually.

This is more ginned up than I thought. The tape makes it more embarrasing. When I heard Fast Attack Boats, I was expecting something a little more along the lines of, well a Fast Attack Boat, not some seasick Persians bobbing around in Bayliners.
Dennis Hopper's dudes in Waterworld were more scary.
