6,000 IS a "big deal"! In an environment such as Iraq, you better believe it that even 1 person, whether Sunni or Shi'aa can make a difference when it comes to aiding the US Coalition efforts in getting this country stabilized!

If I were AQI, I'd be getting a tad bit concerned. I would say this is great news and represents another step forward for Iraqi security and stability. Now we need to get the Shias on board the train.

The naysayers will be trooping out with the negative waves over this story. They cannot abide with good news for it makes them look bad. I, as a person with neither leanings to left or right, still feel that this is great news and hope to read of many more Sunnis coming in for the big win.

Well it's better than nothing and nonsense. 6,000 is six thousand and Sunni's notoriously hate the shi'ite driven Iranian's so in the grand scheme of things this may not sound like a big deal but just like the weather, the first storm generally begins with a few paltry drops of rain before the oncoming flurry ensues.

And consider this, they probably brought their own arsenal to into the coalition! 6,000 snitches, plus women and children( they don't countmuch over there according to the Imam's).

Question: What is the number of people here in the United States that are serving in the military as oppposed to those who choose not to serve?
Roughly 1% of the population, that's no big deal.

Any sign of something positive you find a reason to piss & moan. Successes like this is what builds up Iraq & eventually(hopefully) will stabilize it & be that much sooner to bringing our troops home.

Not bogus since these people are agreeing to fight and include many traditional leaders. But notice we are also paying them 3 times what they would get if the joined the Iraqi police to man the same checkpoints.

The critical point will be if they and the other 77,000 in US backed self-defense groups will cooperate with the Iraqi government (and vice-versa of course) or if this just creates more armed groups to join in the civil war when the US troops levels are reduced in the area.

wow in Hawija, Iraq too where I fought these same sunnis (Iraqi policemen in 2006 with 1ST BCT, 101st Airborne Division Hooah!!!! I wonder how the detention facilities are doing now and at what capacities lol Place was notorious for IEDs, sniper and small arms fire attacks. Is it possible for a turnaround in this area close to Kurdish terrority? 12 kilometers away in Abassi is such a quiet and nice place. Amazing how Iraq is. Reminds me of the Bronx lol

6,000 is a significant amount, especially if as I understood it they were all tribal fighters. That is a brigade size element. All speaking Arabic, all understanding fully the atmosphere, customs, local history and culture of their battlefield. Six thousand people who know exactly when something or someone is out of place. That asset when coupled with a US backed and trained military/police force is priceless.

In a few days or maybe weeks (since we are obviously going to be there for years) I will look at this incredible news again, and let you know.

In the meantime, all of you should be well aware by now that the Sunni's have been siding with us and against AQ for MONTHS if not YEARS now... far more than 6,000 of them too. There has been relative peace in the northern provinces for longer than that and in Anbar, as well.

WHERE is the news in this?

I'll let you know, when we are finally allowed to bring our sons and daughters HOME. They just might tell us, once they are OUT that is.
