"Wallace attributed the decline in the number of pre-signed recruits to the Army's decision last summer to begin offering a "quick ship" bonus of $20,000 to recruits willing to leave for basic training by the end of September. For some recruits that bonus is the equivalent of a year's pay." Bwahaha, that must be the reason...bwaha... |

DanDaily,
I find your humorous methods unusual, but I agree with your basic points. Many families do not want their children to join the military, which makes it very difficult for a recruiter. Also, we're buying so many things from China, they've got many billions of American dollars. We borrow the many back to keep our federal government(and military)in operation. We can keep this process up for a few more years, but our card house will eventually fall. Throw in Medicare and Social Security funding plus dwindling oil supplies, and we've delivered our children a greatly reduced living standard. |

Thank you. I use unusual humor to make my points only because if I said what I really thought I'd get kicked off this site for life! And god forbid anyone tell the truth on here or any where else in this twisted society! Everyone tires to be sooo "Politically Correct" so they don't offend one faction or another! Phooey! Strength of our society is born out of sharing our own views honestly with each other to find a middle ground that works for us all! A truth that has been lost in this new wave generation of being politically correct. |

Agreed 100%. Sadly, here's what we hear too often:

Heck, my mother and grandmother were aghast at my decision to join back in the seventies, didn't stop me. Of course we had "Join the people who've joined the Army" back then, along with "Be all that you can be." |

Not being the sharpest perncils in the box I figure 9% of the annual is pretty good. So, it's not what last year holdovers were but this year they're signing an increase recruits, growing the army, increasing the numbers so to speak. The usually hold over became active quicker thus they are there just appearing in different months. I can't see anyone getting their kicks out of a shortfall anyway (if one happens). What a weird sense of patriotism.

A large percentage are the new HS Seniors which fill in the summer ship months 12 months out & anything can happen during that 12 Month DEP. 9% means a whole lot of trouble and hardships down the road. |

The pool of recruits gets smaller every year. The vast majority of potential recruits are ineligible because they are obese, or have other disqualifing factors.
Most young people are not even able to join, even with the waivers being given by the Army. This leaves a small recruiting pool, and with the current demand to increase the size of the Army makes recruiting a very tough business. http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,90736,00.html?ESRC=eb.nl |

The Army says it is a challenge to achieve recruits. If they would take care of their returning wounded and injured people instead of discharging them for minor infractions or not Med Boarding them they would find the job and challenge a lot easier. As a veteran, i don't blame people for not joining the Army. They treat their people like donkey dung.

Too true, the Art of Compromise is dead, but the center/middle is getting fed up with the extremes on BOTH sides, so there may be hope for us yet! |

Wonder why General Wallace doesn't tell POTUS and Congress what they DON'T want to hear, which is, "It's past time to bring a military draft, back"? Of course, that isn't going happen, because General Wallace (and any other general officer on active duty) knows full well that they would quickly be silenced for dare making such a "public statement". Unfortunately, way to many of American's military brass is content to play the "politically correct" game, and keep their mouths shut, even when they know that to speak up would be the best thing they could do. How sad.

How do these numbers reflect the Army National Guard? Obviously if thier numbers are too low, they need to rely on the Guard more.
Funny, they still won't even talk to an RE-4 from another service. I have been trying to get in the NYARNG for 4 years now. So far, no go. |

The Army missed their chance when I tried to re-enlist after 9-11. They said I was to old (50) The military says we are to old, but we can still man a line or work a check point or most anything else to free up the younger soldiers to do the stuff we can no longer do.

I came back in at 38; did a tour in Iraq and now in Germany and selected for Warrant. Leave here in 2 months. I came in back in the early 80s and soldiers are not built the same as we were back in the day. They do have courage and motivation. I just thinking spending outrageous bonuses to get new recruits is a major waste of money. Bring back the draft; even if its for 2 years and then stop it. you wont have problems with strength and using money smartly. |

The Army is out of step in at least a couple of ways: as mentioned in a previous post they will not accept older people, even into the National Guard. And if they are going to turn down everyone who has ever been prescribed a psychoactive drug such as ritalin or prozac they are going to find their pool shrinking faster and faster. Oh yeah, and exactly what do they prescribe to people with PTSD a year after they enlist? People used to self-medicate with alcohol and illicit substances. Is that better?

If we had a true republican democracy, we would have plenty of recruits for the military! Men will fight to the death for the ideals of republican democracy! However, Aristotle in his book, "Politics", stated that a democracy without republican safe guards, "equal rights and equal responsibilities for all citizens", was one of the worst forms of government in that it represented a "tyranny of the majority."
In our "winner take all, gerry mandered, and bought" form of electoral representation the electoral majority, women and others, have more rights and fewer responsibilities (affirmative action) than men. The incentive of this majority is to destroy those men and those qualities in men (courage, republican values, and character) which might represent a threat to this electoral majority, which acts like a tyranny! In the USA, thus, although we have had a significant increase in the population of the USA, we have had a significant decrease, absolutely and relatively, of the number of men willing and able to serve in our military, especially the combat arms. |

The All-Volunteer Army's success has been reliant upon the selling of tangible benefits to particular classes in need of those benefits. Now, the time has come to weigh the price tag that come along with those benefits by not only the target market but by the influencers of that market. The Jury has come in & they have decided that the risks far outweigh the benefits.
