Except that this has been officially restated from the Commander there, there is nothing new here. The question is not what to do, as I'm sure that this has been studied some time ago; but when....

As it stands right now the USA is impotent with respect to Iran. Can't do anything at all but rattle its saber and blow hot air.

Only because of all the progressives in congress, senate, hollywood and in the US. Ahmadinejad or however you spell it = knows full well those loud mouth progressives are too willing to sell their souls to the devil just to be in charge.

U.S. Commander: Iran Supplying Taliban
Associated Press | September 22, 2007
KABUL, Afghanistan - A top U.S. commander on Friday accused Iran of supplying powerful roadside bombs to militants in Afghanistan, as a suicide car bomb in the capital killed a French soldier and an Afghan bystander.

DO TELL. How long has this been going on? Somebody tell Harry Reid. He still wants to negotiate with Iran about Iraq.

Then I suppose you favor continuing the administration's verbal tongue lashing?

Did you notice this one, Dave?
quote:
Fallon said the U.S. would "act decisively" if the cross-border flow continues. His comments were not meant as a threat of military action against Iran but a suggestion that border interdiction efforts may need to be increased, Fallon's aides said later.

Have you heard anything about Fox Fallon that gives you the idea that his "aides" do much of the talking for him? Or is it possible that he got the word from on high (which sure wouldn't include Harry Reid), and had to make an official retraction he wasn't inclined to make himself, since it would be unlikely to convince anyone? Cool

Gentlemen,
This wouldn't be the first time that U.S. forces intervened in a cross border interference from a neighboring country. Remember the interventions (shootouts) on the Syrian border with Anbar Province last year.

Verbal tongue lashings are generally fair warnings between nations, or a prelude of things to come. If you are implying that Admiral Fallan is reciting the president's wishes; so be it. Admirals and generals don't dictate state decisions; they do however figure into the politics of war -- historically speaking.

Confused Sure, Iran is supporting friendly Islamic factions in Iraq and Afgahnistan. So what ?

How many friendly revolutionary groups in how many countries has the United States supporte ?

In fact you will find the Taliban still using weapons the United States supplied them when they were fighting Russia. And going further back, we supported the nations who together placed Sadaam in power to 'stabilize the mideast".

Remember the Bay of Pigs ? We didn't do a very good job there.

What can the US actually do with Iran?

Air Strikes of course. Punitive at best.

Invade and occupy? Maybe but the troops would be so thin that both places would be a mess though Iran would be easier to occupy as there is less secturaism.

Patrol the border more intensely? Again too few troop and no one is likely to help even if we pay them.

If I am wrong I welcome having my errors pointed out.

Iran depends on sea lanes of communication to survive. The U.S. does not have to confront Iran at, or within her borders.

Wow this is a shock! Roll Eyes I remember all the "Jew-baiting" when Senator Lieberman was criticized for encouraging a strike on the Iranians. He wasn't saying it as a Jew defending Israel, he was saying it as an American protecting US troops trying to help rebuild Iraq!

This is just like Viet Nam and Korea all over again: areas that are off limits will be the very same conduits where opposition forces will obtain their weapons and supplies. Remember Zachary Taylor's Anaconda Plan during the Civil War? The same principle needs to be implemented or all the suffering and sacrifice will be in vain!
