RE: http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,148770,00.html
"In a very real sense, the American military cannot lose a battle, they cannot lose a war," he tells the magazine. "On the other hand, they can't win the struggle themselves. It requires diplomacy, it requires economic assistance, it requires a range of things that are well beyond the purview of the Department of Defense." You have got to be kidding me! It's amazing how thinge are seen much clearer when you take a step back and take a second look, it's a little too late. If he had saw this when he needed to see it, he might still have a job. 10 day warning for posting hot links. (25 Nov 08) vighper |
This comment is especially ironic/tragicomic when you read what a controling, turf-protecting, meglomaniac he was in his crusade to route everything away from the state department and through the pentagon... |

Mr. Rumfeld,
Why don't you keep your comments to yourself and just go away? You had your chance and you blew it. |

Rumsfeld, a loser in Irag, and now wants to
put his imput on the situation. Whow can't believe what I am reading. No matter what anyone says our troops were not ready to fight a city war, as they are trained to fight in the desert or jungle. Old Rummy tried to get it togeather but he just never had the clout to do the job, and of course he resigned because if he didn't he would have been fired. All big titled officials are given the chance to resign when they foul up, please, who do you think we are not stupid that is for sure. Irag is still a mess and will only straighten out when the Iragi people take charge. |

Can't really add very much to the above comments, the man's an utter pillock.
The only thing I would say is that it's a shame he cannot be punished in some way pour encourager les autres. Polies seem to think that they can stuff things up and just walk away with no comeback whereas a bit of a beasting for actions of gross stupidity might concentrate the minds of the next incumbents. |

For this cronnie to critizise anything is like the pot calling the kettle black. It was a huge number of his mistakes that costs lives in Iraq and stopped our troops from doing the job they were sent there to do. He should shut up and stay out of the public life concerning Iraq. He is part of the problem, a large part of the problem and was never part of the solution.

If a tree falls in a forest and lands on a politician, even if you can't hear the tree or the screams, I'll bet you'd at least hear the applause. Paul Tindale |
Speaking of his eminence, here are a few of his quotes that aught to validate his departure. Enjoy!
Your performance depends on your people. Select the best, train them and back them. When errors occur, give sharper guidance. If errors persist or if the fit feels wrong, help them move on. The country cannot afford amateur hour in the White House. You will launch many projects, but have time to finish only a few. So think, plan, develop, launch and tap good people to be responsible. Give them authority and hold them accountable. Trying to do too much yourself creates a bottleneck. Visit with your predecessors from previous Administrations. They know the ropes and can help you see around some corners. Try to make original mistakes, rather than needlessly repeating theirs. There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know. The Secretary of Defense is not a super General or Admiral. His task is to exercise civilian control over the Department for the Commander-in-Chief and the country. Many people around the President have sizeable egos before entering government, some with good reason. Their new positions will do little to moderate their egos. I can't tell you if the use of force in Iraq today will last five days, five weeks or five months, but it won't last any longer than that. I would not say that the future is necessarily less predictable than the past. I think the past was not predictable when it started." "We do know of certain knowledge that he [Osama Bin Laden] is either in Afghanistan, or in some other country, or dead." "We know where they are. They're in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south and north somewhat." –on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction "Death has a tendency to encourage a depressing view of war." "Freedom's untidy, and free people are free to make mistakes and commit crimes and do bad things." –on looting in Iraq after the U.S. invasion, adding "stuff happens" "As you know, you go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time." "[Osama Bin Laden is] either alive and well or alive and not too well or not alive." "I am not going to give you a number for it because it's not my business to do intelligent work." -asked to estimate the number of Iraqi insurgents while testifying before Congress "I believe what I said yesterday. "Needless to say, the President is correct. Whatever it was he said." "Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns -- the ones we don't know we don't know." "If I said yes, that would then suggest that that might be the only place where it might be done which would not be accurate, necessarily accurate. It might also not be inaccurate, but I'm disinclined to mislead anyone." "There's another way to phrase that and that is that the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence. It is basically saying the same thing in a different way. Simply because you do not have evidence that something does exist does not mean that you have evidence that it doesn't exist." -on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction "It is unknowable how long that conflict [the war in Iraq] will last. It could last six days, six weeks. I doubt six months." -in Feb. 2003 "Well, um, you know, something's neither good nor bad but thinking makes it so, I suppose, as Shakespeare said." "Secretary Powell and I agree on every single issue that has ever been before this administration except for those instances where Colin's still learning." "Learn to say 'I don't know.' If used when appropriate, it will be often." "I don't know what the facts are but somebody's certainly going to sit down with him and find out what he knows that they may not know, and make sure he knows what they know that he may not know." "I'm not into this detail stuff. I'm more concepty." "I don't do quagmires." "I don't do diplomacy." "I don't do foreign policy." "I don't do predictions." "I don't do numbers." "I don't do book reviews." "Now, settle down, settle down. Hell, I'm an old man, it's early in the morning and I'm gathering my thoughts here." "If I know the answer I'll tell you the answer, and if I don't, I'll just respond, cleverly." "Oh, Lord. I didn't mean to say anything quotable." Have a good day!~! |

Not a good reference for anyone. In truth, he and Tommy Franks set the tone for the Grand FU of the Iraq War. |
