I am not sure what time will tell, but one thing is very likely ... that if we assume that the Iraqi army unit that just moved out is typical, we are in for major disappointment. The 1st Division is multi-ethnic, specifically trained in counter-insurgency (one of General Petraeus' first products) and has been operating all over Iraq with considerable effectiveness since 2004. If all of their forces worked that well, we would already be gone. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/iraq/iif.htm Cool

This is evidence that the Democrats in congress and senate are dead wrong on the war and would abandon these people to Al Queda and mass murder . They did this in Viet Nam and million in the region died. You don't leave a child just learning to walk on their own, you stay with them until they are safe. This article shows how to do it.

I'm incredibly happy (for a change) that the media is so fickle. One person, report, or command says some specific buzz word and it triggers a complete reversal in opinion.

All of the sudden the Dems are turning their support for the war; Hillary says we're winning, Pelosi changes her tune and now doesn't think withdrawl on a time-table is a good idea...the media makes sure they cover each and every person saying POSITIVE things about Iraq now...

Of course, people have been SAYING positive things all along, but when it wasn't "hip and trendy" to be WINNING the war in Iraq, the media wasn't covering it.

Now all of the Dems see media and opinion polls swinging back the other way and low-and-behold, the rhetoric changes too.

Don't let my comments here lead anyone to believe I think it's "over" or that we've won or something equally ridiculous. It's still the same door-to-door slug fest we've been putting up with for several years now...it's just amusing to me to see how easily the media can manipulate.

All in all, it's starting out to be a good day today Smile

Wait a minute! Who was in charge of the military and the government at the end of Vietnam?

I think Vietnam was doomed from the get go cause they were unwilling to take North Vietnam and fight the Russians or the Chinese if necessary.

Did I want to fight in World War III over Vietnam? Hell no but that is why it was never going to end well for us.

You asked who was in charge of the govt at the end of Vietnam, it was the Congress that was primarily responsible for the outcome as they cut off all funding and despite pleading from President Ford they wouldn't send a dime more to SE Asia.

At any rate this is good news for the people of Iraq and most especially Fallujah.

Some 'child'! Iraq, and Iraqis, have been on-site for 8 thousand years. It's good that the young can tell the old a thing or to about how "it"'s done.

Multi-ethnic - read mostly Shiite, or Kurd, neither of which are particularly acceptable to the Sunnis in Fallujah. The Iraqis will be posted on anti-insurgent operations outside the city. Sounds more like the removal of a splinter, something the Marines (who will still garrison Fallujah) are doing to get those Sheikhs on-side.

If the Marines do not have to blow the hell out of Fallujah again I will buy the it's working better.

Is there anything left of that place after twice being a battleground?

Once again, just a small bit of tentatively good news, but it is enough combined with other recent positive events to give some hope. If this Iraqi Army unit is the exception then it should be used to model other units after.
