When our country needed a light all-terrain utility vehicle in WW II, a small company came up with the Jeep. But the Army needed large quantities fast, so they took the manufacturing contract away from the little guy and gave it to GMC and Ford.
Why didn't the DoD do the same with the MRAP, the HUMVEE, and myriad other vehicles? "Detroit" could have tooled up in less than a year and produced 100,000 of these in fairly short order after that.
Yet there are plants in Detroit closed down and workers idled bacause the economy is so wonderful. Soon, the contract will be outsourced to China, India, and Mexico. Meanwhile, the troops die.
