We've been discussing this since 2004 here on the boards.
Maybe they should put us in charge? Maybe not "There are those who believe there are two types of people in the world: Those who believe there are two types of people; and those who don't." John Mahoney... |

This topic has been addressed numerous times on various forums but one consideration should be mentioned, the presence of involuntary soldiers completely changes the atmosphere and leadership style of any unit. Those of us who served with draftees know this from experience. While the vast majority served to the best of their ability there was always the underlying feeling that they did not take the whole experience as seriously as those of us who were "RA". I suspect that bringing back the draft would cause more problems that it would solve.

The only reason we don't have a draft now is because:
1. It would probably unite the country with a common goal. But no one wants that because it's much more fun to fight each other and remain paranoid. 2. Both the Republicans and Democrats feel it will cost them election votes if they bring back the draft. Neither side will promote it for fear of losing their gravy train jobs. 3. Politicians haven't figured out yet how they will keep their own kids out of harms way. Past deferments for ridiculous stuff like 'sole support of a millionaire mother' won't cut it anymore. Or like Romney said that his five military age boys serve their country by helping to get him elected. Hypocritic idiot for sure. Let the peasants fight; his boys shouldn't have to do it. 4. We may stop using so many rich contractors and do the economical thing and use military people to perform miltary tasks instead of paying inflated prices to corporations to do the things the military should be doing. 5. The myth keeps going around that if you're drafted you don't love your country and you will be a lousy soldier. That's a lie. Given the motivation of someone trying to kill you, a draftee can fight just as good as an RA. I believe 1-3 are the main reasons. |

I agree that a draft would introduce problems because of additudes. A person that didn't what to serve would require an additude adjustment and that means training people would change to correct the additude. I joined the Navy of my own free will and worked with people from time to time that didn't want to be thier or had no were else to go. It was difficult because you had to watch your back around them. As an NCO I can tell you its better to have a few good men than a gang of lossers. On the flip side a draft could be good for drafties and the service. I often experianced additudes about service people as being the bottom of the barrel by people opposed to violence. Some view military people as sadistic killers or foolish men that would believe anything they were told. I am opposed to violence and feel the military is thier to contain it. I think what a great world this would be if people could learn to keep thier opinions to themselfs and stop trying to exploit and control everyone for thier own profit. Note: I have learned one thing that stands out about humanity as a whole. Most people will always look for ways to put themselves above others, I was never interested in proving myself to most people because its only for thier benifit not mine. Only a fool would listen to the ravings of most people or attempt to prove them wrong.

If I was able or if they would accept me I would go help our brothers and sisters in a heartbeat. I know that many of us dissabled vets on this forum as I am one myself from time to time get fustrated that we are "excluded" from being able to serve due to an injury. I know that in my case haveing rods in my back does not make it easy to carry a full gear ruck sack of humping a .50 "if that even happens anymore" but the thing is alot of us can help in the fight regaurdless of certain limitations that we have. I think that the government should instead create a situation where they could allow dissabled vets the chance to serve before initiating a draft, the turnout would be surprizing.

Don't see a draft happening for 2 reasons. First, it would be political suicide for any politician endorsing it (except for Chuck Rangel, of course). Second, we'd have the 60's anti-war survivors jumping for joy - a new generation of students ready and waiting to stage huge protest rallies. Right now they get to sit back and watch the war on TV, but listen to the howls of protest if they were drafted to see it first hand.

You have a good point. Thier must be positions that could allow you to function normally and give you a sense of pride. If I were in your shoes I would feel used I guess. When you serve your country are they not supposed to serve you., not toss you aside because they don't need you anymore. Keep the faith and try to overlook the short sidedness of the establishment. I guess they don't understand the heart of a true American. |

If the country had a draft, there would be no reason not to raise taxes too. So:
That is why I oppose the war-losing ideologues of both parties. |

The Idealogues put other priorities ahead of war-winning but apparently not war-starting.I do not speak of legitimate conflict only the trumped up variety.I value my two sons too much to waste their potential on someone elses flawed, if not criminal agenda.@yrs military service should be mandatory after high school graduation.Whether these kids stay in or not is up to them.

You are absolutely rigto every point! I would add 2 more: 6. Current soldiers have been fed the myth that somehow they are better at fighting and serving our country because they volunteered instead of drafted. The Army would have to deal with the consequences of changing this mindset; and I think that it would be almost as difficult to do today that as integration was 60 years ago. And -just as important- the fat bonuses used for re-enlistment would go away, just as the financial incentives for initial enlistment will. 7. Current generals want a closed and totally submissive enlisted force, who have voluntarily chosen the military service. They don't want to deal with the "blowback" which dealing with "Citizen Soldiers" would entail. I served with the 4/10 infantry in Panama in a platoon of draftees. I served in a company of the 1/17 infantry in Korea more than 4 years later, which was 100% volunteers. They were the same kind of people, capable of the same things and with the same character. They were led the same way and were just as effective. |

THREE YEARS LATE BECAUSE OF TOO MANY "YES" MEN IN THE PENTEGON !
BUT: BETTER LATE THAN NEVER ! Two years of service would be good for the coming generation of young people. |

If they bring back the draft, your going to have so many draft dodgers and protests thatll itll be taken away the next day. This war has lasted too long and his is Bush and his advisers' way of keeping the war going. |

My reply to that is, I spent 11 years active and 6 prior in the guard. When I decided I'm through and got out, I was sent a letter stating that I had been selected to be retained it the IRR. As I see it my 8 year commitment was up? Maybe not, that qualifies as involuntary! Or did I miss some other fine print, needs of the goverment.
