I saw a clip of this speech on the news tonight. Very emotional. Even I am not cynical enough to believe Robert Gates was anything less than sincere. If he really does write to the families of the troops killed in battle every night, God bless him. I hope he is giving good counsel to the President and that GW is listening.

I salute Captain Zembiec, the Lion of Falluja. He sounds like the kind of Marine we would all be proud to have served under. May he rest in peace.

Of all the members of the current administration, I like Gates the best, hands down. He is obviously a man who tries his best to serve his country as best he possibly can, and he isn't afraid to show his emotions. It's hard to watch him and deny his obvious feelings for honor, and service.

He is also likely to be a Senator someday, or... even higher up the political food chain.

I'll lok for the larger article that goes into more detail on him, the battalion he was in, etc. He was a badazz in more battles than that one. He was one of those truly "rare breeds" who people followed without hesitation.

RIP sir..

God bless Captain Zembiec and his family. Men like him who fought in the Battle of Fallujah made that battle another successful chapter in Marine Corps history. It was that battle and the brave Americans who fought it that led to other successes in Anbar Province.

May peace and honor be with the survivers of those who paid the ultimate price.

The history of the Marine Corps was built upon such men as Major Zembiec. I lift up his family to the Lord and pray that the God who created the Universe will be gracious to them and bless them, and cause His face to shine upon them.
Just as the President is sincere in his affection for the military, so too is Secretary Gates.

God Bless you Major Zembiec. There are too few of you lions to go around and your loss weakens our nation. Rest in peace warrior, your legacy lives on in the marines you led.

We have have gone so long, doing so much, with so little, now we can do anything with nothing.

I'm a former USMC officer and USNA grad, too, but I'm not worthy to wash this man's feet. When I saw this on the news, I lost it. My 9 and 11 year old kids had never seen me cry before (laughing at me because they thought I was playing around). God, he makes me proud of the USMC. I ache for our country's loss.

God Bless, Major.

"someone who 'goes out every day and creates menacing dilemmas for the enemy.'" - that is awesome. that quote should go up there with "No man can do very wrong if he fires upon the enemy"

I suspect young Marine Corps recruits, far into the future, will learn of Major Zembiec's bravery and esprit de corps. Semper Fi, Lion of Falluja.

To Nate Moore: Your statement of the ACHE was so accurate. I tear up everytime I watch the Lim Lehrer report on PBS nightly. They respectfully show names, rank ,service and hometown of the most recent KIA's. I ache when I think of America's sons and daughters being killed in a distant land. I am so relieved that Robert Gates is the decent, caring man he is proving to be. My prayer is that he can persuade W that it's time.
