Hmmmm... Undersecretary of Defense? Since when did Undersecretaries become "mouthpieces" for the Administration? or the entire Pentagon? Isn't this why they have Tony Snow and his protégés?

A copy of Edelman's response, dated July 16, was obtained Thursday by The Associated Press.

"Premature and public discussion of the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq reinforces enemy propaganda that the United States will abandon its allies in Iraq, much as we are perceived to have done in Vietnam, Lebanon and Somalia," Edelman wrote.

He added that "such talk understandably unnerves the very same Iraqi allies we are asking to assume enormous personal risks."
=========================================================================================

Hillary Clinton's arrogance was felt as far away as Iraq. My husband said that people just wanted to spit at the very sound of her voice. Hillary Clinton's long term goal is to go back to the White House and resume her globalist social agenda without being hampered by a pesky war. As smart as she is in moving about the political arena, she, like her husband and the snippy liberals in the "Narrow Majority" are totally oblivious to the needs of national defense and the threats that await us as a nation if and when they gain total control.

Finally, know this, Hillery Clinton is no friend of the military. I served in the Air Force when her husband Bill spent eight years making a mockery of our military and our country. If it happens again, it will be our fault.

I don't understand how Clinton thinks she can just pull us out of the war. If we get pulled out right now, they are just going to come and bomb us again and we're going to lose more innocent people. The military is paid to go over and protect the people and their freedom, not sit here in the states and wait around while innocent people are dying.

Both sides raise legitimate points. It reminds me of the Monty Python sketch The Annoying Peasant ... except the topic is dead serious. IMHO, it is no secret to the insurgents that America's planning skills are "iffy" when it comes to Iraq.

Can't dispute the truth in that.

Edelman's letter does offer a passing indication the Pentagon might, in fact, be planning how to withdraw, saying: "We are always evaluating and planning for possible contingencies. As you know, it is long-standing departmental policy that operational plans, including contingency plans, are not released outside of the department."

Can't argue with that either.

Partisan politics at the expense of the mission and the servicemembers carrying it out.

I wish the AP had included the whole letter in their article.

Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines called the response "at once outrageous and dangerous."

"Redeploying out of Iraq with the same combination of arrogance and incompetence with which the Bush administration deployed our young men and women into Iraq is completely unacceptable, and our troops deserve far better," said Reines, who said military leaders should offer a withdrawal plan rather than "a political plan to attack those who question them."

Whenever we withdraw from Iraq, if it is planned as poorly as the occupation was it will be just one bad sutuation following the other.

Anything that Bush or the majority of the Republicans support.... Clinton will be against.

Sadly.... it is called good politics... poor citizenship perhaps but good politics.

Exactly where are we going to get the 200,000 troops necessary to win the war in Iraq, CPL? That's what it would take. I was there. And before you insult liberals, let me tell you about my beloved conservative family that turned their back on me because I supported the Iraqi people and refused to label them all terrorists. It was liberal commie pinkos that helped pay my medical bills while the conservatives called me a weakling and a loser for getting PTSD. It's not at all as simplistic as you make it seem.

And can you lay off the capslock and the ellipses? It makes it very hard to read what you're saying.

What the hell are you talking about? Faith doesn't win wars, soldiers do. We don't have enough troops to effectively occupy that country. "God" holds no rank in the US Army, and occupies no place in the General Orders. I won't obey somebody else's God, no let somebody else dictate religion to me. How dare you tell me to disobey my oath of enlistment. There is still separation of Church and State in this country, or has that been outlawed since I last re-enlisted?

We never need more troops in Iraq, we just change in stragety. And Withdrawal or Responsible Redeployment is not that. The war is a distraction from.......the great news of the economy. The Dems dont talk about the good news because they want our troops to come home. if we get attack it will not matter that are troops are home due to the fact that the Military cant be use on the CONUS any way.

Were it that Senator Clinton's concern about victory was at least equal to her interest in redeployment, a clever word for surrender.

I AM a soldier who came home. Don't you dare try and force me to worship YOUR God. I can't believe you would try that kind of thing. Answer that.

And what kind of strategy do you reccomend in Iraq that hasn't already been tried? The country has open borders and insurgents are flooding in from all directions. You really think 145,000 troops are going to suddenly win now when we haven't done so before? When the war planners bluntly told Bush he needed a minimum of 350,000 troops?

Interestingly, the Under Secretary's rebuke didn't include Senators Lugar, Hagel, and Warner who have expressed exactly the same concern as Senator Clinton.
