RE: http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,136938,00.html
I believe that the M16-series of rifles could be easily refined to be made more reliable, at the same time re-chambering it for the .243 Winchester round (call it the 6mm NATO round). This round would have a bigger punch at longer ranges than the current 5.56mm round without much added recoil. The ORIGINAL M16-type, the AR-10, that was submitted for Army trials, was in 7.62mm NATO. But it was re-chambered to 5.56mm at the request of the Army; Armalite -the original designer- still offers an M16-type rifle in .308Win, .243Win and .223Rem. As for sidearms, an affordable, reliable pistol in 45ACP can be and should be made available. It's a much better round that can be controlled by just about anyone. |

Yep it's the quarterly "Replace the M-16" article.

Why not just chamber it for the same short 7.62mm round used in the AK, then you'll never run out of ammo as long as your killing the enemy - and go with the new design that used a driving rod, so that all the dirt isn't going back into the bolt from the gas tube. It has always amazed me that the military stuck the GI with a weapon that shoves its own dirt into the bolt and receiver every time you pull the trigger. Garand and Browning designs send the gases outside. The AR traps them all inside to foul everything - crazy!! I shot expert with them for 22 years, and I own one, but I HATE cleaning them, and I never had to use one to save my life. Something that gives the dependability and ruggedness of the old M-14 without the weight really ought to be developed - Wandering and Wondering |
